In 2006 Will went to Borneo to teach English in a primary school for three months. This was apart of his gap year between high school and University. He went to Malaysian Borneo to the town of Buduk Nur with another Australian, Elyse Burns. Sadly his photos from his time in the village are mostly in the post, where they have been for the past five months, and are likely to remain for eternity.
Surviving, however, are his photos from his and Elyse's travels after his placement in Borneo, which led him from (take a breath!) the village to Brunei, one of the World's richest countries, which also happens to have been in a "state of emergency" for the past forty years; to Labuan, where the Japanese forces for Northern Borneo surrendered in the war, and where all of the tombs for allies killed in Borneo are placed; up the highest mountain between Papua New Guniea and the Himalayas where he (says he) almost froze to death; into the jungles of Sabah where he saw wild orang-utans (not in a rehabilitation centre) and otters and monkeys and wild pigs and many many bugs; to Singapore where good shoppers go when they die (and presumably where bad people who hate shopping go also); to Mallacca (or Melaka) which used to be an extremely powerful city, perhaps even on a par with Venice; to Deepavali celebrations in a town on a plantation, led by a wonderful Indian- Malay family; to the Cameron Highlands, home to extensive tea plantations, and finally to the capital Kuala Lumpur and then home. note:
My travel blog at getjealous.com/wk_spatula also has some more photos from my trip to Gunung Mulu. which my friend Elyse took. I'm also putting links at the end of most descriptions linking to the relevant section of the blog.
